frequently asked questions

What size pan will I need to cook the Skillet Biscuits?

We're big fans of GSI cookware and typically use the Pinacle 8" skillet. You can go as small as a 6" inch skillet with our breads. Our baking recipes (biscuits and skillet bread) require a lid with a skillet, but you can also use aluminum foil and create a dome over the skillet — it works great and saves on space!
Jalapeño Biscuits?! How spicy are these?

There is some spice in the biscuits from the dehydrated jalapeños, but overall the dish has a low to medium spice level. If sharing with someone sensitive to spice, the jalapeños can be picked out of the cooked biscuit if needed. The Gravy is peppery, but not spicy.

What is the portion size of this dish?

Your package will make three biscuits about 3 inches in diameter and enough gravy to top all biscuits (6oz gravy).

If eating the biscuits as a side dish, you can divide the dough into 4 biscuits.

Why are a heat diffuser & heat-tolerant spatula recommended?

For best results when using Packit Gourmet's Skillet-Bake technique, we recommend using a Heat Diffuser under your skillet to prevent scorching the biscuits. This is especially true if using lightweight cookware on strong direct heat such as a JetBoil.

If you do not take a diffuser, folded aluminum foil can help diffuse the heat as well.

A sturdy heat-tolerant spatula is helpful for a smooth exit from the pan.

Do I have to have a lid on the skillet while cooking the biscuits?

If you'd prefer to ditch your skillet lid, you can also create a dome lid using aluminum foil. If doing this, ensure the aluminum is all the way around the top of the skillet, so an oven-like environment is created for baking.

Very delicious but I can't see myself making this by campfire. We made the biscuits during our RV trip in the Skillet at first and found it a little difficult on the stovetop. We tried again in our oven and it came out MUCH better. Very easy to make when you have and use the right tools. Again, over a campfire or hot coals, might be more difficult. The taste? Delicious! Biscuits were great, sausage gravy was awesome, great flavor. Little top spicey for the wife but I thought it was great.

This is delicious and easy to make. Also makes a very filling dinner. Beware that the biscuits are very spicy. The only problem I had was that it was difficult to get the gravy and oil packets out of the biscuit mix without spilling biscuit mix everywhere.

I'm not sure what went wrong, but I ended up with sausage soup instead of sausage gravy. I used the 5 oz of water that was called for in the directions. Maybe I wasn't supposed to reseal the bag while the gravy sat? Maybe that would have helped it thicken? Staff reply Thanks for feedback, James! We've found that if the water being added to the gravy is not BOILING, then the gravy will not thicken properly. In fact, even if too much water is added, as long as your water is boiling it'll thicken right up! And we do recommend resealing the bag as the gravy sits, this helps hold the heat in.

Not a fan of sweet breakfasts, like more of the savory and spicy stuff to get the day started. This fit the bill perfectly. Cheddar jalapeno biscuits were outstanding and sausage gravy was creamy and meaty. Great job on this one Packit Gourmet!

    frequently asked questions

And we do recommend resealing the bag as the gravy sits, this helps hold the heat in.

    frequently asked questions

Worth the time and effort it took to make. One of the best backpacking meals I’ve ever had, hands down!

I love this breakfast, no matter when I eat it. I have had this for dinner, when I have more time for prep and it is simply the best. Yes, pan frying the biscuits seems a pain, but man is it worth it.

Not a fan of sweet breakfasts, like more of the savory and spicy stuff to get the day started. This fit the bill perfectly. Cheddar jalapeno biscuits were outstanding and sausage gravy was creamy and meaty. Great job on this one Packit Gourmet!

Yet another PackitGourmet favorite! Had this for breakfast on a short trip. Just the right amount of kick and the gravy and biscuits came out perfectly. Superb combination of flavors. Great change from the usual oatmeal, granola or meal bar for breakfast. Will buy again.
